ABOUT AGOA.info
 This online information portal on the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) was
launched in February 2003, having initially been conceptualised and developed in 2002
by Eckart Naumann and Trudi Hartzenberg.
The core drivers for the development of this portal include the following:
- the United States is offering manufacturers from (currently) 37 Sub-Saharan
African ("SSA") countries the most liberal and comprehensive access to the
largest market in the world until 2015 (extended from an initially 8-year period ending 2008);
- a substantial number of SSA countries were initially very slow in taking
advantage of these opportunities, often due to a lack of awareness regarding
the benefits offered under AGOA and its product coverage;
- duty and quota-free access to the US market under AGOA is comprehensive, yet requires adherence to specific Rules of Origin (ROO);
- reliable information and trade statistics relating to AGOA were not readily available to those seeking it, being dispersed across a wide variety of media and locations.
The portal forms part of the Trade Law Centre for Southern Africa's (tralac - www.tralac.org) initiative to disseminate trade law information to the region and is supplemented by projects that will enhance
the value of the portal.
This approach ensures that through the ongoing publication and analysis of AGOA-related developments, and the provision and maintenance of the latest available trade data for all AGOA-beneficiary countries and the US, the potential benefits and opportunities of AGOA are enhanced. This portal thus serves as a vehicle for the efficient and effective dissemination of AGOA-related information among stakeholders in SSA and the U.S.
