Country Information - South Sudan

ECONOMIC BACKGROUND South Sudan was formally established when it gained independence from Sudan on 9 July 2011. This followed a referendum about autonomous rule for South Sudan that was set out under the Comprehensive Peace Agreement signed in January 2005. The country's capital is Juba with an estimated population of 250,000. South Sudan declared AGOA-eligible on 26 March 2012. Landlocked South Sudan's economy is currently still severely underdeveloped from decades of civil with the (previously) northern parts of Sudan. Most of the country's government revenue is derived from local oil resources which are substantial but which currently depend on transhipment routes through (northern) Sudan. BI-LATERAL TRADE OVERVIEW Trade between South Sudan and the United States is largely one-way, with South Sudan being a net-importer. The country's recent eligibility under AGOA may assist with reversing this situation, especially given the fact that oil qualifies for preferential exports, but over time agricultural and manufactures may follow.
